With this form of defective vision, the eye’s focal point is displaced. The incident rays of light are already brought together before reaching the retina and then spread out again. This means that they are not focused on the retina. Objects at a distance appear blurry.

Usually, the reason for this is that the eyeball is too long, which changes the eye’s refractive power. The longer the eye, the higher the degree of short-sightedness and blurriness. To restore image sharpness, the eye’s refractive power must be reduced. This is done by means of vision aids or with surgery.

Treatment with the excimer laser (LASIK) is very promising for people with minor to moderate short-sightedness of up to -8 dpt. Lens surgery such as ICL (up to -18 dpt) or RLE (from -18) is also a treatment option.
